1.1 Background of the Study

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) form a critical component of the Nigerian economy, contributing significantly to employment and economic development. However, SMEs often face challenges such as limited access to capital, outdated technology, and inefficiencies in production processes (Ogundele et al., 2024). The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into small-scale manufacturing operations has the potential to address many of these challenges by automating processes, improving efficiency, and reducing operational costs.

Kebbi State, a region known for its agricultural output, is home to a growing number of SMEs involved in food processing, textiles, and other manufacturing activities. Despite the increasing interest in AI globally, the adoption of AI in small-scale manufacturing remains limited in Kebbi State, largely due to the lack of awareness, high implementation costs, and limited technological infrastructure. This study seeks to assess the prospects of integrating AI into SMEs in Kebbi State, exploring the potential benefits, challenges, and opportunities for AI adoption.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

SMEs in Kebbi State face significant challenges in their operations, such as limited access to modern technologies, inefficient production processes, and high labor costs. These issues contribute to low productivity, reduced competitiveness, and limited growth opportunities. Despite the potential of AI to address these challenges, SMEs in Kebbi State have not fully embraced AI technologies due to factors such as lack of awareness, inadequate infrastructure, and financial constraints.

This study aims to explore the prospects of AI integration in small-scale manufacturing in Kebbi State and assess how AI can improve productivity, reduce operational costs, and enhance the competitiveness of SMEs.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the potential benefits of integrating AI into small-scale manufacturing operations in Kebbi State.

2. To evaluate the challenges and barriers faced by SMEs in adopting AI technologies.

3. To explore the prospects of AI in improving productivity, reducing costs, and enhancing the competitiveness of SMEs in Kebbi State.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What are the potential benefits of integrating AI into small-scale manufacturing operations in Kebbi State?

2. What challenges do SMEs in Kebbi State face when adopting AI technologies?

3. How can AI improve productivity, reduce costs, and enhance competitiveness in small-scale manufacturing operations in Kebbi State?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

1. Integrating AI into small-scale manufacturing operations in Kebbi State will lead to increased productivity and cost savings.

2. SMEs in Kebbi State face significant barriers such as lack of technical skills, limited infrastructure, and financial constraints in adopting AI.

3. The integration of AI will enhance the competitiveness of SMEs in Kebbi State by improving operational efficiency and product quality.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it evaluates the potential for AI to transform small-scale manufacturing operations in Kebbi State. By providing a comprehensive assessment of the benefits and challenges of AI adoption, the study will inform policymakers, business owners, and stakeholders about the opportunities for AI-driven growth in the SME sector. The findings will also contribute to the body of knowledge on AI adoption in the manufacturing sector in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the integration of AI technologies into small-scale manufacturing operations in Kebbi State. It covers SMEs involved in food processing, textiles, and other manufacturing activities. Limitations include potential challenges in data collection, the high cost of implementing AI in small-scale operations, and the lack of standardized AI solutions for SMEs.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Artificial Intelligence (AI): The use of advanced computational techniques to automate processes and enhance decision-making in manufacturing.

2. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs):Businesses that are typically characterized by their small scale, limited resources, and workforce size.

3. Manufacturing Operations: The process of producing goods from raw materials through various production stages.

4. Productivity: The rate at which goods are produced per unit of input, such as labor, materials, and capital.

5. Competitiveness: The ability of a business to outperform others in terms of product quality, cost efficiency, and market positioning.
